They stole the fledglings from their nests.

Still others wandered mean and bold
And ate each other, I've been told.

And snoring and roaring
And dinosauring?

Back inside
But they kept tromping
Off the pages instead?

Poetry for classification of animals-
MAMMALS Mammals cover their tender skin
With a layer of fur or hair,
The babies are born, not hatched from eggs
And when young, need lots of care.
Dogs and cats are mammals that walk
Bats are mammals that fly.
Dolphins and whales are mammals that swim.
And mammals are you and I.
AMPHIBIANS An amphibian starts life in a pond
As it hatches from an egg.
It learns to swim with its sturdy tail
Since it has no arms or legs.
After a while, as it eats and grows
Its tail shrinks very small.
And its tiny arms and legs grow big
So the amphibian can hop and crawl.
BIRDS The animals that can fly are birds
Because of their wonderful feathers.
They rise with ther wings, and steer with their tails
And frolick alone or together.
Birds build their nests from leaves and twigs
And lay their eggs in batches.
Their parents sit upon the eggs
To warm each til it hatches.
FISH A fish has fins which lets it swim
In its ocean, lake or pool.
It has no arms or legs or nose
And groups of fish are a school.
Some fish are fresh-water, some are salt,
All have scales, not hair.
They force some water through their gills
To breathe a little air.
REPTILES A reptile breathes like you and me
Not water, like fish, but air.
Its body is covered with bony plates
Or scales instead of hair.
Some like deserts, some like swamps
Some like their home a plain.
They hatch from eggs like tiny adults
And in that area remain.
INSECTS Insects number in the millions
They crawl, swim and even fly.
Exoskeletons help protect them
They live in water, dirt and the sky.
Smelling with feelers and tasting with feet
Three-part bodies and hatching from eggs.
Two antenna, and four wings
And three pairs of jointed legs.
Those Bats
They come in many colors,
Flying through the nighttime air.
They use sonar to guide their way,
Those bats are everywhere!
They eat so many little bugs,
The farmers love them so.
But when the daylight comes along,
Do you know where they go?
Amazing Bats
Amazing bats like to eat----
Thousands of bugs for a tasty treat.
Flying through the moonlit air----
Traveling here and traveling there.
Hibernating when the weather's cold,
Gathered with hundreds of friends, I'm told.
Many bats are endangered, I'm sad to say---
There are fewer and fewer bats every day.
Be kind to bats, that's the thing to do--
Tell your friends and your family too!
Bats
Flying, flying in the sky,
Bats are neat, I'll tell you why.
Flying foxes are the tallest,
Bumblebee bats are the smallest.
Bats are yellow, red, and brown,
Bats sleep hanging upside-down.
Some eat bugs and some eat fruit,
Some look mean and some look cute.
Flying, flying in the sky,
Bats are neat, now you know why!
Brown Bat's Beetles tune(London Bridge)

More that four----bugs galore!
Old brown bat is keeping score
Of his ----------beetles!
Old brown bat has gulped a heep,
Now it's time for him to sleep.
I don't think that he'll count sheep
Just more-------beetles!
Little Bat
Small and furry,
little bat
fly through the sky at night.
Listen' listen
little bat
as echoes guide your flight.
Swoop and dive,
little bat
catch insects as you fly
Hurry, hurry
little bat
back to your cave nearby.
Snug and warm
little bat,
toes hold the ceiling tight.
Sleepy, sleepy
little bat
wrapped in your wings until night
Bats by Brenda Dahl
Are all bats hairy, scary things
Rushing by on muffled wings,
Out in caves into the night,
On some silent secret flight?
I think not! I think they're great!
No matter size or shape or weight.
From radio waves to airplane wings,
Bats can teach me many things.
The Bat
Bats are creepy; bats are scary;
Bats do not seem sanitary;
Bats in dismal caves keep cozy;
Bats remind us of Lugosi;
Bats have webby wings thatfold up;
Bats from ceilings hang down rolled up;
Bats when flying undismayed are;
Bats are careful; bats use radar;
Bats at nighttime at their best are;
Bats by Batman unimpressed are!
By Frank Jacobs
The Bat
By day the bat is cousin to the mouse.
He likes the attic of an aging house.
His fingers make a hat about his head.
His pulse beat so slow we think him dead.
He loops in crazy figures half the night.
Among the trees that face the corner light.
But when he brushes up against a screen,
Weare afraid of what our eyes have seen:
For something is amiss or out of place
When mice with wings can wear a human face.

Butterflies By: Karen Shapiro
See the butterfly up in the sky.
Watch it as it flutters by!
Butterflies start as tiny eggs.
Out come caterpillars with many legs.
Little caterpillars growing long,
crawling,
feeding,
getting strong.
They love to nibble and to chew.
They eat small leaves
and big ones, too.
Four weeks pass. They grow more.
They shed their skin.
One time, two times, three times, four.
Once again a change comes around.
Now it is hanging upside down.
Soon, it spins a silky pad
to hold on tight,
and a halter, too,
to keep it upright.
Now it sheds its skin
one time more,
to reveal a chrysalis,
not at all like the skin before.
Inside this shell it is changing,
growing.
Eyes, legs, wings,
are now almost showing.
What can it be?
Wait and see.
It's a butterfly!
Its wings are wet.
It has to rest.
It can't fly yet.
Soon, it tries hard with all its might,
spreads its four wings--
and takes a flight.
Like a flower in the sky,
what a sight --
a butterfly!
Wings of black, orange,
yellow, and blue,
red, green, gold,
and purple, too.
Colors bright as in a rainbow.
What makes these colors?
Do you know?
It's layers of little scales that we see.
They make the colors as bright as can be!
Butterflies drink nectar from
pretty flowers.
It tastes so sweet, they sip for hours.
They use their long, thin tongues
to drink.
That's kind of odd, don't you think?
From caterpillar to butterfly
takes eight weeks in all.
All sizes of butterflies--
big and small.
See the butterfly up in the sky.
Watch it as it flutters by!
O Butterfly
O Butterfly, O Butterfly
Flying through the sky
Where are you going
This fine morning?
Are you going to see the
elves dancing?
Or the flying horses
prancing?
I can see them when I
dream at night
What a wonderful sight!
The Life of a Butterfly
(Tune: Skip to My Lou)
I'm a caterpillar, wiggle with me,
I'm a caterpillar, wiggle with me,
I'm a caterpillar, wiggle with me,
What'll I be my darlin'?
A chrysalis, now sleep like me,
A chrysalis, now sleep like me,
A chrysalis, now sleep like me,
What'll I be my darlin'?
A butterfly, come fly with me,
A butterfly, come fly with me,
A butterfly, come fly with me,
What'll I be my darlin'?
Now all together, let's do all three!
A caterpillar, a chrysalis, a butterfly, three!
Move your body like this with me,
The life of a butterfly, darlin'!
The Fuzzy Caterpillar
The fuzzy caterpillar
Curled up on a leaf,
Spun her little chrysalis
And then fell fast asleep.
While she was sleeping
She dreamed that she could fly,
And later when she woke up
She was a butterfly!
The Caterpillar
Fuzzy little caterpillar
Crawling, crawling, on the ground.
Fuzzy little caterpillar
Nowhere, nowhere to be found.
Though we've looked and looked
And hunted everywhere around!
When the little caterpillar
Found his furry coat too tight,
Then a snug cocoon he made him
Spun of silk so soft and light.
Rolled himself away within it --
Slept there day and night.

FROGS
Some frogs
have their own rocks
where they sit...
and think
and wink
and look at the world
and nap
and snap
and pretend to be fierce
Sometimes, they play hide and seek,
or leap frog.
And in the evenings
they sing.
They sing high
and low
AND LOUD
and soft
blp...
Some pucker their lips and whistle.
And to this very day
some frogs
have their own rocks.
Some,
But not all...

And gobbled up the soap!
And when he tried to talk
He had a BUBBLE in his throat!

Cricket
by Mary Ann Hoberman
A cricket's ear is in its leg,
A cricket's chirp is in its wing.
A cricket's wing can sing a song.
A cricket's leg can hear it sing.
Imagine if your leg could hear.
Imagine if your ear could talk.
Imagine if your arm could talk.
Would everything feel upside down
And inside out and wrongside through?
Imagine how the world would seem
If you became a cricket, too.

O Mrs. Mosquito, quit biting me please!
I'm happy my blood type with your type agrees.
I'm glad that my flavor
Has met with your favor.
I'm touched by your care,
Yes, I'm touched everywhere.
On my arms and my legs, on my elbows and knees,
Till I cannot tell which
Is the itchiest itch
Needs the scratchiest scratch.
Your taste for my taste is the reason for these,
So Mrs. Mosquito, quit biting me, please!
Insect Rap
For insects we are really cool
Find us floating in the pool
Find us crawling on your lunch
We really are a groovy bunch.
We have 2 antennae
We have 4 wings
We have 6 legs
And some other things.
We pollinate plants in the spring
We carry disease to everything.
We've lived on earth for millions of years
We outnumber you and play on your fears.
We have 2 antennae
We have 4 wings
We have 6 legs
And some other things.
The head, the thorax and the chest
We already told you about the rest
And now we want to tell you this
We all go through metamorphosis.
We have 2 antennae
We have 4 wings
We have 6 legs
And some other things.
ANTS
The busy ant works hard all day
And never stops to rest or play.
He carries things ten times his size,
And never grumbles, whines or cries.
And even climbing flower stalks,
He always runs, he never walks.
He loves his work, he never tires,
And never puffs, pants or perspires.
Yet though I praise his boundless vim
I am not really fond of him.

The Insects' World
Ethel Jacobson
Insects are creatures with three pairs of legs,
Some swim, some fly; they lay millions of eggs.
They don't wear their skeletons in, but out.
They come in three parts. Some are bare; some have hair.
Their hearts are in back; they circulate air.
They smell with their feelers and taste with their feet,
And there's scarcely a thing that some insect won't eat:
Flowers and woodwork and books and rugs,
Overcoats, people, and other bugs.
When five billion trillion keep munching each day,
It's a wonder the world isn't nibbled away!
The Firefly Lights His Lamp
Although the night is damp,
The little firefly ventures out,
And slowly lights his lamp.
The Cocoon
I found a cocoon
That a caterpillar made,
Fastened to a leaf
Hanging in the shade.
He barely had room
To wiggle or wag,
Like me zipped up
In my sleeping bag.
I looked each time
That I passed his way,
But he never budged
Until just today.
Something happened!
He wagged and wiggled
And then climbed out
And carefullly jiggled
Small wet wings
That grew as they dried.
He'd turned to a butterfly
Inside!

Hanging by a silken thread
Until I can escape.
Rest, rest, chrysalis
While I change inside;
Now at last my time has come
To be a butterfly.
Stretch, stretch, pretty wings,
It's a special day;
Soon they will be strong enough
For me to fly away.
Fly, fly, butterfly,
Fly from flower to tree;
Find a place to lay my eggs
So they can grow like me.

And be a butterfly

Good Morning Butterfly
Way up in the sky
The butterflies fly.
While down in their nests
The butterflies rest.
With a wing to the left
And a wing to the right
The sweet little butterflies
Sleep all through the night.
SH-h-h-h they're sleeping.
The bright sun comes up.
The dew falls away.
Good morning, good morning
The butterflies say.
The Wise Owl
The wise old owl
Sat in an oak.
The more he saw,
The less he spoke.
The less he spoke,
The more he heard.
Why can't we be like
That wise old bird?
The Wise Owls
One wise owl sitting in a tree
Hooted to another, "Come sit with me."
Two wise owls sitting in a tree
Hooted to one more, "Come let's be three!"
Three wise owls sitting in a tree
Hooted to a fourth, "Come quietly."
Four wise owls sitting in a tree
Hooted to a fifth, "Join our family."
Five wise owls sang "Whooo, whooo, whooo!"
And before you knew it, away they all flew!
Five Little Owls
Five little owls in an old elm tree,
Fluffy and puffy as owls could be,
Blinking and winking with big round eyes
At the big round moon that hung in the skies.
As I passed beneath, I could hear one say,
"There'll be mouse for supper, there will, today!"
Then all of them hooted "Tu -whit, Tu-whoo!"
Yes, mouse for supper, Hoo hoo, Hoo hoo!"
I Talk With the Moon
I talk with the moon, said the owl
While she lingers over my tree
I talk with the moon, said the owl
And the night belongs to me.
I talk with the sun, said the wren
As soon as he starts to shine
I talk with the sun, said the wren
And the day is mine.
Lonely Owl
An owl sat alone
On the branch of a tree
And he was as quiet
As quiet could be.
His eyes were open,
And round like this: OO
He looked all around,
Not a thing did he miss.
Some children crept up
To the branch of the tree
And they were as quiet
As quiet could be.
Said the wise old owl
"Too wooh! To wooh!
Then up jumped the children
And away they flew!
Wise Mister Owl,
Keen as he can be,
Quietly watches
From up in his tree.
Suddenly he spies
A fine tasty treat,
Far off in a field,
Ah, something to eat!
Four Little Owls
Four little owls sitting in a tree
The first one said, "Whoo look at me."
The second one said, "We have very large feet."
The third one said, "We also eat meat."
The fourth one said, "Come on, let's fly!"
Away they went, high up in the sky.
Mr. Owl
I saw an owl up in a tree
I looked at him and he looked at me.
I couldn't tell you about his size
For all I saw were two big eyes.
The Owl
by William Jay Smith
The Owl that lives in the old oak tree
Opens his eyes and cannot see
When it's clear as day to your and me;
But not long after the sun goes down
And the Church Clock strikes in Tarrytown
And Nora puts on her green nightgown,
He opens his big bespectacled eyes
And shuffles out of the hollow tree,
And flies and flies
and flies and flies,
And flies and flies
and flies and flies.
The Owl
The owl is wary, the owl is wise.
He knows all the names of the stars in the skies.
He hoots and he toots and he lives by his wits,
but mostly he sits. . . (and he sits. . . and he sits).
Owl
by X.J. Kennedy
The diet of the owl is not
For delicate digestions.
He goes out on a limb to hoot
Unanswerable questions
And just because he winks like men
Who utter sage advice,
We think him full of wisdom when
He's only full of mice.
Spider, Spider
Spider, spider, you are a friend I know.
You eat bugs that eat little plants that grow.
You really are not so scary.
You're not so very hairy.
You have eight feet.
Your web is neat.
Little spidery friend of mine.
SPIDER
I was sitting in my room one day
When it came right through the door
A big spider sped right by me-
Went racing cross the floor
Oh that spider
Oh how it scared me so
But spiders can be good friends
And so I let it go
I watched it crawl up on the wall,
to find a spot just right
It spun a web so beautiful
And then went out of sight.
Now bugs and flies do not scare me
For I know that its true
That a spider web is good to have
Bugs stick to it like glue.
Spiders
By: Mary Ann Hoberman
Spiders seldom see too well.
Spiders have no sense of smell.
Spiders spin out silken threads.
Spiders don't have separate heads.
Spider bodies are two-part.
Spider webs are works of art.
Spiders don't have any wings.
Spiders live on living things.
Spiders always have eight legs.
Spiders hatch straight out of eggs.
Since all these facts are surely so,
Spiders are not insects, no!
Spiders
No wonder spiders wear bear feet
To run their cobweb races.
Suppose they had to have eight shoes,
How would they tie their laces.
The Spiders Spin
At early morn the spiders spin,
And by and by the flies drop in
And when they can, the spiders say,
Take off your things and stay all day!
Spider
I saw a little spider
with the smartest spider head;
she made-somewhere inside her-
a magic silken thread.
She made it look so easy
I wished all day I knew
how I could spin a magic thread
so I could dangle too.
What's for Lunch
A spider invited
a fly for lunch
crunch
crunch
crunch.
Spider, Spider
Spider, spider
Spin your web
Catching insects
In your thread
How many insects can you catch?
One , two, three.....
The Spider
The spider loves to entertain
Her neighbors and relations,
But woe to any bugs or flies
Who accept her invitation!
So have a care, be wary of
The most accomplished spinner.
When she murmurs, "Be my guest!"
What she means is, "Be my dinner!"
The Spider Web
The spider spun a silver web
Above the gate last night
It was round with little spokes
And such a pretty sight
This morning there were drops of dew
Hung on it, one by one;
They changed to diamonds, rubies red.
When they were lit with sun.
A spiders nice to have around
To weave a web so fine
On which to string the drops of dew
That catch the bright sunshine.
Spiders
by Janet Bruno
Spiderlings hatch from eggs.
Each one has eight tiny legs.
A spider has more eyes than you.
Most have eight, and you have two.
A spider has two body parts.
Across its web it quickly darts.
From a spider's spinnerets
Sticky spider silk jets.
Spiders feel the frantic tugs,
Of their favorite food; it's bugs!
The Spider Poem
Spiders are not insects
Spiders have eight legs.
Spiders have four pairs of eyes
Spiders hatch from eggs!
Spider webs are slick
Spiders weave them tight
Spiders spin that silky string
Spiders weave webs right!
Spider, Spider
Spider hurrying,
Spider scurrying,
See her silken thread.
Spider hurrying,
Spider scurrying,
See her little web.
Spider Webs
By : Amy Goldman Koss
The spider weaves a sticky web
To capture bugs to eat.
What keeps the spider's sticky web
From sticking to her feet?
Spider webs are very tricky
Because not all the strands are sticky.
Unlike the passing hapless fly,
The spider knows which strands are dry.
But if she accidentally stands
Upon one of the sticky strands,
She still would not get stuck, you see--
Her oily body slides off free.
The Spider
The spider loves to entertain
Her neighbors and relations,
But woe to any bugs or flies
Who accept her invitation!
So have a care, be wary of
The most accomplished spinner.
When she murmurs, "Be my guest!"
What she means is, "Be my dinner!"
Spiders
Clever spider spins a thread
To make a trap we call a web.
Clever spider knows that she
Will have some insects with her tea.
